They have just closed all the schools in Mexico as a severe strain of swine flu has appeared in various places around the country. Most victims do survive, but the Mexican death toll is approaching 150. We could use some prayer, Folks.

I left the orphanage yesterday just before the government quarantined it. I'm glad that I got out in time, but I won't be able to show any Christian cartoons this week.

Doctors are hoping that the epidemic is declining, as fewer Mexicans are reporting flu symptoms. The quarantine was definitely a factor.

The 1918-1920 influenza pandemic killed between 20 and 100 million people, with 50 million being a reasonable estimate. The pandemic hit Pacific Islanders worse than most of the world, but American Samoa had no fatalities. The military commander ordered the island to be blockaded, and it worked.

May 2, 2009

Four more Mexicans died yesterday from swine flu, and the government confirmed 81 new cases. However, the increase of new cases is partly due to increased awareness and testing. The government did announce that the swine flu is not as deadly as had been feared: of those reporting for treatment, 98.8% survive.

The numbers keep bouncing, as one government agency insists that only 12 Mexicans have died of swine flu. Meanwhile, Mexicans, who are about the nicest people in the world, are dismayed to find themselves being feared world-wide. China has quarantined about 50 Mexican tourists and businessmen after a Mexican tourist in Hong Kong became Asia's first confirmed swine flu case. (He is alive and recovering). A few more countries have banned airplane flights to or from Mexico, and American carriers are cutting flights due to decreased demand.

I'll continue to pray for you and your ministry.  I know the flu is cutting into what you are able to do.

Thanks, Nebbap. We had 54 last week, despite a decrease in services. Mexico is lifting bans and quarantines, so we should do better this week.

There are at least 5 schools in our area that are closed for this week because of the flu going around. There have been a few confirmed cases not far from us of the 'swine flu' and at least a dozen more suspected cases. (I don't remember the exact count now.) I mentioned in my Sharing A Blessing/Praise thread about me being sick. I teased that only the Lord knows if that is what I have had for the past several weeks. I wasn't tested because it was just beginning to be a "hot topic" and the doc said that as long as I wasn't hanging around pigs, I probably didn't have it. (  Wink Sometimes I wonder about my kiddos being pigs and maybe I caught it from them. LOL Wink) Anyway, several days after I had been on antibiotics, it was being said that it could be contracted from another person...especially someone who had recently been to Mexico. Now that is a slight possibility for where I may have gotten ill. Our church has a Spanish ministry. I don't know if any of them had recently been to Mexico, but it is possible. The other slight possibility is from helping to distribute food to needy families. There ususally are many Hispanic families that come through the line each month. So, whether I had the 'swine flu'/H1N1 virus....whatever you prefer to call it Wink....I'm glad that I'm beginning to feel a little bit better.

Just when we thought it was over:

Fifteen minutes before beginning to pick up the kids for Christian cartoons, they put out a quarantine. Three people died of flu yesterday in Jalisco, the state we are in, but it is not confirmed if it was swine flu. The state government has closed all schools until May 18.

Even when doctors confirm that a person died of swine flu, it isn't certain. One WHO official has stated that there are only twelve confirmed deaths from swine flu, while other sources are claiming that there are over 200 confirmed deaths.
